Welcome friends and neighbors to the great Spring Scavenger Hunt! Below you will find twelve clues that will lead you to twelve locations around the area where you will take selfies (groupies?) to post on this Garfield Ridge Chamber of Commerce Facebook event page. https://fb.me/e/2p5IROxB8
If you are stuck, each clue has a hint. QR codes for the hints (look for the golden eggs!) are located at one of four “hint centers”:
Chicago EA - 6619 W. Archer
Archer Heights Credit Union – 6554 W. Archer
Beat the Streets Wrestling – 5985 S. Archer
Vince’s Pizza – 6217 W. 63rd
You have from April 15th – April 24th to complete as much as you can! There will be fabulous prizes awarded!
Simple enough? Good! With that out of the way, here are your CLUES!
1. Long John Silver? No! Mayor “Long” John Wentworth used to live in Garfield Ridge (“long” before it was Garfield Ridge). He might have hosted banquets at his house, as he overlooked his farm that stretched into Summit. If you see him, tell the current John “hello”!
Bonus Point: Take a pic with the historical market (plaque)!
Stumped? Hint is at Chicago EA
2. While Garfield Ridge has many unique homes, there is one home that, technically, kind of does not exist. (What??!?!) It started life as a farmhouse, and the city grew up around it. While it technically has an address, the only way to access this “railroad lover’s dream” is from an alley. I will NOT tell you that the access is from an alley behind Massasoit, so don’t bother asking.
Stumped? Hint is at Chicago EA
3. Our neighborhood is home to several businesses that make absolutely delicious things. Like a Croatian walnut Cake. Or a sour cream cheesecake. They made some wonderful cookies for the recent cookie walk!
Bonus Point: Take a video of your group trying to pronounce the name of this business (wrong answers only!).
Stumped? Hint is at Archer Heights Credit Union
4. Bartlett is a northwest suburb of the city, named for Luther Bartlett. But a (ahem) better Bartlett actually built many homes in Garfield Ridge when it began as a gated community. There are a select few of Frederick Bartlett’s gates that still exist around the neighborhood (they are sneaky and many of them have moved). If you draw a *triangle*, or if the weather isn’t too Nordic, uh, you could ask Melvin’s wife if she knows how to “fit some code” into this clue.
Bonus Point: Take pics with multiple correct answers!
Stumped? Hint is at Archer Heights Credit Union
5. What if you lived in a green house? What if you grew lovely flowers in your green house? What if you had been growing flowers in your green house for over 100 years? Where would you put this “green house”?
Bonus Point: Take a pic with your favorite “bunch”
Stumped? Hint is at Beat the Streets
6. Milton Coronado painted a beautiful mural on the side of the Fit Code building. You can take a pic of the mural if you want, but to solve this clue you need to take a pic with one of the local institutions pictured in the mural. See if your EFForts Depend on your knowledge of fire prevention!
Bonus Point: Is there a dalmatian or similar four-legged furry friend that could join in the picture?
Stumped? Hint is at Archer Heights Credit Union
7. Ok! We are now allowed to travel. But how? Where? Somewhere OK? To where is is OK to Travel? Who could I ask?
Bonus point: Take a pic with the big logo! (If they’re open, make sure to stop in and say “Hi”!
Stumped? Hint is at Chicago EA
8. There exists a cafe that features a fantastic 1-pound BLT. It is very possible that, due to the season, you have given such things up. They have you covered with a lenten fish-fry. Well, they won't cover *you* with it, but it would cover the plate. Or 63 plates.
Bonus Point: Take a pic with the menu!
Stumped? Hint is at Vince’s Pizza
9. Do you need to feed something that walks, crawls, flies, runs, or swims? Then you should visit the place who brags “If it Walks, crawls, Flies, Runs or Swims, We Can Feed It!"
Bonus Point: Take a pic with Tom Turkey!
Stumped? Hint is at Vince’s Pizza
10. Have you ever seen a lion eating bagels? Me neither. But there is one bakery on Archer where you can *kind of* see it. It's next to a place where a trio of male siblings serve a mean breakfast. Take a pic holding/eating any of the amazing cookies at this bakery for an extra point.
Bonus point: Take a pic eating a delicious cookie!
Stumped? Hint is at Beat the Streets
11. The Willam Marvy Company is the only producer of this item in the entire country (I'll give you a minute to Google that). It's OK if you can't "stan"d the site of blood, Josh knows what he's doing. Take a pic with the William Marvy contraption!
Bonus point: When was this business the Garfield Ridge Chamber of Commerce “Business of the Month”? (It’s on the GRCoC Facebook page!)
Stumped? Hint is at Beat the Streets
12. If you’re not feeling well, there is a central location in Clearing you can go for some good old-fashioned personal attention. You don’t need to be drug over here. How many symptoms do you have? 62? 63?
Stumped? Hint is at Vince’s Pizza
